Name and basic type of activity: Where is the pot of gold?
Goals:
· Introduce the topic about Saint Patrick day.
· Present new vocabulary related to Saint Patrick day.
· Participate in a celebration of a different country.
· Show a n understanding of the “Story about the little Leprechaun”.
· Show awareness of colours, and specific vocabulary.
Contents:
· The day of Saint Patrick day in other country.
· Colours of the rainbow.
· Enjoy celebrating the party of Saint Patrick day.
· Reviewing sentences as :Where is it? I don´t know.
· Specific vocabulary: leprechaun, pot of gold, rainbow, good luck, here, there, colours.
CONTEXT:
· First course of primary education of a Public Bilingual school of a small town. The activity is carry out the week before 15 of March (St. Patrick day).
MATERIALS AND MEDIUM:
· A picture with a pot of gold behind a rainbow that the children have to identify around the school building. The students have to pay attention to any wall, floor, window or other spaces in which they think the “pot of gold” can be. The picture must be stick in a peculiar place.
ORGANIZATION AND PROCEDURE:
· With a voki message through the blog of the teacher, children must understand that we are going to celebrate St. Patrick day and their job will be to find the Pot of gold of the little leprechaun. If they finally find the picture with Pot of gold, they will have good luck. But they have to keep it as a secret until the day of Saint Patrick, in which everybody will be in front of it and sing a song together to celebrate it.
TIMING.
· One week before the day of Saint Patrick day.
LANGUAGE:
· Vocabulary: Little leprechaun, green, rainbow, (colours of the rainbow), pot of gold, good luck.
· Expressions: Where is it?/ I don´t know/Happy Saint Patrick day/ Good luck!
TEACHER ROLE:
· Monitor in the activity. The teacher must encourage the children to take part of the party and to maintain in secret the place in which the pot of gold is. The teacher must encourage children to be enthusiastic with this peculiar activity.
LEARNER ROLE:
· Active participant in the activity. Learner must show interesting in a cultural activity celebrated in a country where everybody speaks in English.
Cognitive processes:
· Establish a relationship with the expressions that are used in class to find objects and the way they have to find something outside the classroom (in this case the pot ogf gold). Moreover they have to use vocabulary they know as colors to describe the rainbow.
· Compare this festivity with other about of their country. They have to pay attention if there is some similar of is completely different from theirs.
Level of difficulty:
· The activity is very easy to carry out. But before listen the message of the leprechaun in the blog, children must have revised and worked specific expressions and vocabulary.
At the end of the activity children must say in group where they think the pot of gold is. To do this, the class will be divided in groups of three children and they will have to say in low voice where is the pot of gold. Later the teacher will allow children to go out the classroom and go the place in which the pot of gold is. To finish the activity they will sing a song together.
